Few rooms in Blake Hill House elicit stronger comments than the Jungle Bathroom. People either love it or hate it. When Andy and I bought BHH, we inherited the decor. Dorothy, the previous owner, was a fearless decorator. Although we have been making changes in nearly all of the rooms here, neither Andy nor I am in a hurry to update this half bathroom. The Jungle Bathroom is a conversation piece, and we are in favor.
(A Place For Everything is a new blog feature for 2019. In these posts, I will share how I utilize our existing storage, offer creative solutions for trouble areas (#oldhouseproblems, am I right?), and discuss how we manage all of our belongings. These posts contain affiliate links.)
Under the Sink
Since the Jungle Bathroom is just a half bath, we only keep necessities here, and I tuck them all into a lidded basket that fits under the sink.
- Two rolls of extra tissue
- Extra hand towels (We use Turkish cotton hand towels or regular hand towels in the Jungle Bathroom. All of them are gray or black in here. By sticking to one color of towels in each separate bathroom, the laundry folders know exactly where they belong.)
- Guest hand soap – When we have guests or a party, I swap out our daily hand soap with the fancier bottle.
- Cleaning wipes*
- Toilet Cleaner
- General spray cleaner
- Marble cleaner
- Daily hand soap refill
*We have a lot of cleaning products in here right now, especially since the marble requires special care. Now that the kids are older and tidier, we won’t be using wipes anymore. The container is almost empty. Once they are gone, we will switch to
Top of the Sink
For daily hand washing, I bought a glass bottle of hand soap at T.J. Maxx. After we used all of the original soap, I began refilling it with a less expensive brand. The glass dispenser looks more elegant than a plastic bottle.
Just like many old homes, our bathroom does not have an exhaust fan, and installing one would be complicated. The pomegranate-scented oil diffuser keeps it smelling fresh in here and all the way out into the hall. We have a box of matches handy too. Of course, with little ones around it is vital to keep both of these out of reach.
On either side of the toilet, I store a fancy chrome toilet brush and a lidded trashcan.
That’s it. By keeping cleaning supplies handy, it is simple to zip in the jungle bathroom and tidy up or give it a deep clean when necessary.
Have I missed anything crucial? Is there something beneficial that I should be keeping in
…Yay or nay?

Hey Stacy, I kind of like the jungle wallpaper combined with the other traditional elements. It’s a shame your main bathroom sink wasn’t in as nice condition as this one! It looks amazing! I think the only things I might change (or suggest changing) is the light fixture, and I might prefer a slightly larger mirror. It seems a tad small for the size of the sink/countertop. The basket is a nice storage solution.
Stacy
I kind of like it too. 🙂 I also wish the upstairs bathroom sink was in better condition, but at least the one in this bathroom is what most people see if they come over for a visit.

I love the jungle wall paper and coral trim. I second the larger mirror, in gold? We also have only pedestal sinks and I might have to use your covered basket idea. Currently I opt for a vase containing a roll of toilet paper on the back of the toilet and everything else is in the linen closet down the hall…not right there. Well except for the toilet plunger. Our old house plumbing definitely requires one of those be immediately present.
Stacy
The toilet plunger is a just a couple of steps away in the basement stairwell, but we should probably move it here. *knock on wood* We have not needed one in this bathroom yet.

I really like the wallpaper, because it is KRAAAZY and so different from everything in the rest of the house…also because it’s a Dorothy tribute when so many other things have been changed to align with your preferences. I am very fond of half baths that are “out there” in color and design. I think my favorite aspects, though, are the marble sink and that lovely bit of hardware (soap dish/cup holder??) where you’ve stashed the little box of matches. Your house is just crammed with amazing things!
Stacy
I am fond of keeping a tribute to Dorothy too. The little soap dish/cup holder is unlacquered brass. I love it also. The toilet paper holder matches. 🙂
Jen
Absolutely YAY for that wallpaper!
I also love the idea of buying the same but differently colored towels so you know which bathroom they belong in.
Stacy
The towel trick is a winner! It keeps, ahem, lazy folks from putting the towels in the nearest bathroom instead of where they need to go. 🙂

I love! the wallpaper. It’s a lovely piece of whimsy. I would put in a bigger mirror more in scale with the sink, but otherwise I love the room. If it was a full bath and used to get ready in the mornings I might wire in a new socket, but for a half bath there’s no need.
Stacy
It’s funny that you mentioned a socket. There is one behind the door about over five feet high on the wall. LOL
Amy
I don’t know why, but I love that wallpaper. I love that it’s so funky and different from the rest of your (gorgeous) house. A half bath is the perfect place for a shot of crazy!
The sink looks like it’s in amazing shape.
Stacy
Thanks, Amy. We lucked out with this sink. 🙂

Matching TP holder…sigh…what did I say about amazing things? Re: Dorothy tributes: don’t you also have a map up in the library, maybe of Scotland? So when/if you decide to let the wallpaper go, you’ll still have that as a memorial.
Stacy
We do have a map of Scotland in the library. 🙂 We found it in a closet. (Library Post)

While I’m not a fan of the wallpaper, it’s not terrible and I get why you want to keep it. I love the “tribute” idea. But count me as another vote for a bigger mirror, gold or black frame. One thing I’ve been keeping in my bathrooms is a little step stool for any Littles that come over to visit. That, of course, began with my first grandchild, but I’m just going to always have one because I hope I never run out of little visitors!
Stacy
The step stool idea is smart! My small 12-year-old daughter is just now tall enough to see in most of the bathroom mirrors. LOL
Jeri
Where is the toilet located in this bathroom? Also, I’m amazed at how much stuff fits into the basket.
Stacy
There’s a little bump-out to the right. The toilet is there. 🙂

It’s lovely and I say leave the wallpaper! I agree with possibly a bigger mirror (not too big, don’t want to hide repeat of the paper, but keep frame thin and elegant,) and perhaps new light fixture, a classic shape, perhaps with unlaquered brass to match-it will add a touch of shine and make the wallpaper look intentional!
Stacy
These are all good ideas. I love unlacquered brass.
