About Last Week: Inching Towards Progress

This new weekly series is a casual look into my day-to-day DIY life at Blake Hill House.

Last week it felt like most of the projects that I tried to complete in the living room did not work. All-in-all, it was a frustrating week for DIY, but I’m inching along. Also, with the arrival of our first snow, the fall weather is officially over. Give me all the cozy blankets and hot chocolate.

Thank you for watching.

You mentioned having trouble getting shelves back in, so wanted to share a possible solution. Our 1920s bungalow has an original built-in cabinet with glass front doors in the kitchen. It needed some serious restoration, and we ended up having to replace the shelves. After carefully measuring, cutting, staining and sealing, I could not get them back into the cabinets without scraping up the interior or ruining the shelves. What to do? An online search turned up the suggestion to cut a small (about 1/2″) triangle off either of the rear shelf corners. This gave just enough extra clearance to allow the shelves to go back in without any damage. The tiny cut off from the corner doesn’t show at all. Hope this helps.

Hi Peggy, Your method is pretty much exactly what I did. These are already notched out a little, and I just gave them an extra little room with my oscillating tool blade. 🙂
