Over the past six weeks, I expected to dissolve in a puddle of stress and self-doubt over this project, but those feelings never arrived. Even Andy remarked that I didn’t seem as stressed this round. That roughly translates to, “You didn’t ask me to paint anything horrible.” With plenty of support here, and on Instagram, this room is finished. It’s a minimalist bedroom with cozy cabin bedroom decor. Extra thanks to everyone who helped me figure out how to solve my mural mistakes. That almost went very badly.
For reference, this room belongs to my oldest son, who is away at college and will likely never live at home again full-time. He is always welcome to it, and we will use it as an overflow guest room too.
Here’s everything you might have missed:

Now, are you ready to see the Cabin Vibes Bedroom? (Imagine that I’m swinging the bedroom door open dramatically. )
Welcome!
It all came together, and I am so excited. Feel free to click on each image to see the full-sized version.

We all know that these posts are no fun without some before shots. So, I am happy to oblige.
First, instead of tearing out the ugly ceiling tiles, I simply primed and painted them so they would recede into the background. They’re still ugly, but they are not as noticeable anymore. Eventually, we will tear them out and find out what is lurking beneath, but that’s a project for another time.
While this room was in generally decent condition, Andy and I did spend some time repairing plaster cracks. We had not performed any maintenance in this room ever, and it was long overdue.
Next, I painted a mountain mural on two walls. There were a few false starts, but it came out a winner. If I cannot live in the real mountains, at least I have a painted version here in BHH.
Paint Colors: All by Sherwin-Williams (top to bottom) Accessible Beige, Balanced Beige, Moth Wing, Virtual Taupe, Smokehouse, Cast Iron, Roycroft Bronze Green
The most significant functional change I made was to move the bed to the opposite wall and use the chimney wall for the modified IKEA KALLIX instead. The wall between the entry door and the closet is wider and more suitable for a bed and side table. It is also closer to an outlet, so I was able to add additional lighting.
Oh, and I built a freaking headboard! The plans for the original bed included floating nightstands and a platform made from scratch. Instead, I bought the platform and scrapped the floating nightstand idea. Even so, I’m not ashamed of where I landed. It’s arguably one of the most interesting things I have ever made. Some people love it. Some people are not into it at all.
I know that I caused some of you heartache when the headboard covered half of the mural on one wall, but I promise there is plenty of it left.
I purposely left the larger mural wall void of furniture or art.
Here’s a little peek into the bathroom. Fun fact: The floor is the same color as the darkest bottom color on the mural, and it looks completely different.
The mural is still hiding behind the headboard, which is hanging on two cleats. If we ever want to make a change, we can remove the headboard and fasteners, patch the holes, and touch up the mural. It will be as if the headboard never happened.
Cozy Cabin Bedroom Decor Details
Most of the decor was brought in from other rooms in the house. The price tag for the whole shebang was not overwhelming. I bought paint, wood, a blanket, a poster, and a basket. To keep costs low, I used items and supplies that I already had as much as possible.
In a previous post, I described my son’s decorating style as minimalist + laundry and books. However, he does have another interest. He loves music and his vinyl collection. Even though he probably won’t live in this room, I tried to keep him in mind as I considered the design plan. I wanted to make sure I honored his hobby by creating a place for his record player. After all, he left the records here. They are fair game!
There are only two outlets in this room, so the player on the dresser fits best along that wall.
He keeps his collection in the small closet beside the chimney, but we pulled out a few and tucked them in a basket under his new bookshelf.
I also hung his favorite signed record from The Zolas.
The original plans included window treatments. However, I have decided that I would prefer a custom option to minimize how much of the gorgeous original windows get covered. I am in the research phase. For now, there are cheap roller shades on each, and the neighbors won’t get a show.
Cozy Cabin Bedroom Decor Sources
Naturally, I included Cavallini Papers & Co. artwork. I have some hanging in almost every room now. I pulled the eye chart from the library. Also, a room is never finished in BHH without houseplants–the real kind.
Eye Chart | Poster Frame | Dog Print and Painting (vintage) | Mirror (thrift)
Arboretum Tree Poster and Hanging Kit | Dresser (vintage) | Record Player (similar) | Flaming Lips Record
Sconces | Cord Covers (spray painted)| Painting & Mirror (thrift shop) | Vinyl Record Display Frame (Michaels)
Bed Platform | Sheets – Yard Sale (similar) | Blanket | Basket (similar)
Side note: That quilt in the basket is vintage. It was handmade by my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother! It’s over 100 years old.
Rug (similar)| Basket (Target) | Table (estate sale) | Candle | Pendleton Blanket
Be Free Pennant – This company is local, and I love everything about them.
Even More Photos!
It’s a regular photo extravaganza today. I took a ton of photos, so I might as well share them.
That’s the end of it, folks. The ease of this project still leaves me in wonder. Did I forget anything? Why did it go so smoothly? Hopefully, I came close to nailing the cozy cabin bedroom decor.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to sound smug. Some projects are easier than others, and I know it won’t always be smooth sailing around here. It certainly hasn’t been so far! Even so, I do like to think I’ve learned a few lessons since we moved to BHH five years ago, and the One Room Challenge has given me a run for the money more than once. Remember the Street Side Front Porch? Then, there was the time I ran the NYC marathon during week five of the Breakfast Nook project, and I was so sore that I could barely wrestle pieces of plywood in place. Good times.
Maybe I have finally learned to choose realistic projects and pace myself during the One Room Challenge, or perhaps not. Time will tell.
As always, I welcome your feedback and thoughts about this bedroom and the One Room Challenge in general. Did any projects catch your eye this round? Share them in the comments. Also, if you just started following along during the One Room Challenge, please subscribe to the blog for updates right in your inbox or favorite feed reader. I have another big project coming up, and I am very excited about it. (Psst! It’s the downstairs hall!)
The featured designers revealed their rooms yesterday, and the guest participant link-up continues through Sunday night. Let the glut of inspiration begin.

Stacy, it’s perfect! Minimalist, but sooo cozy. Rustic with refined elements. Modern, yet traditional. It’s a room that will most definitely live well!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Liz. It’s snowing lightly outside right now, and cozy will be on my mind for the next six months. 🙂
Chris
Looks great! I love the cabin vibe
Stacy
Thank you, Chris!
Cassie Bustamante
yes! i was so excited to see this space- it’s just perfect!!!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Cassie!
Ann
Wonderful Job! I do love that mural so, and would have used a spindle or iron headboard so as to see it all, but your headboard is definitely more fitting for a Cabin vibe. Your Ikea hack looks even better full of books, and I love the postcards. I see the “100 Famous Views of Edo” bridge card daily, since mine is pinned to a mini clothes line hanging above my desk…courtesy of a friend who sent it to me years ago.
I am glad this ORC was less stressful than your previous ones–congrats on that! Incidentally, your side porch floor is still one of my all-time favorites.
Stacy
Thank you so much, Ann. I love that we have the same postcard too! Our exchange student brought some last summer, and I couldn’t resist bringing these home from our trip to visit him in Japan.
I am glad that you enjoyed the side porch project. Despite how hard it was at the time, I feel such a sense of satisfaction about it. It has dramatically changed how BHH looks on that side of the house.
Jen
Love it! Your son might want to come home more often now to enjoy his new digs 😉
Stacy
If only it would lure him! 😀 Thank you, Jen!
Betsy
Love it as usual! I feel like you captured the cabin vibes,, especially with the mural and the bedding.
I have to say, the window placement in that room is perfect! I really like that little corner with the plant…..
(I think you deserved a stress free ORC!)
Stacy
Thank you, Betsy! I love the windows too. That plant has made the rounds. It was initially in the Breakfast Nook. Then, it moved to the guest room. Now, it lives here. 🙂
Crystal Diaz
Looks great! I think the headboard is my favorite part, mural is a close second.
Stacy
Thank you, Crystal!

You’ve done well, Stacy! I love it all. And I love the reflections of the sconces in the mirrors – it looks like they go on and on.
Stacy
Thank you, Barbara. 🙂 That sconce photo was fun to take!
SH
That sconce-reflection photo is my favorite of all–but the others all tied for second though? Yeah, when you immediately feel a nap coming on, you know it’s cozy. And new skills, tools and better planning and execution contributed to less stress. But mostly, it was just your turn for fun one.
Stacy
Thank you, SH. That was a fun photo to take. 🙂 Maybe I’ll get lucky with a low-key project next time too.
monica
Wow! Brilliant! The room itself must be so happy to be looking so good!!!. I love, love , love the mural – it was so worth all of your effort! The placement of the bed in its new spot is great! Lucky son!
ps – I really like your one room challenges, and your blog in general, because you seem like a regular person to me, doing regular things that I could do (except for the woodworking stuff which I think I could do if I had the tools and a teacher!). So many of the others in the ORC all seem to be primarily about having a chance to “swipe up” so they can sell something….
pps. Not sure if you know that “This Old House” (the TV show guys) now has a podcast- I noticed that the most recent episode all about windows….haven’t listened yet
Stacy
Thank you so much, Monica. Your comment means a lot to me. I try hard to do the work myself. Sometimes I have to call in the pros, and I am lucky that I do have my friend Dale who offers his workshop and teaches me about woodworking. I learn a little something new each round.
Sam Jarman
It turned out perfect! I love the decor and the mural!!!
Stacy
Thank you, Sam!
Jennifer
It’s wonderful! Cozy and minimal is the perfect way to describe it.
Your ORC, and the others who did all of the work themselves, are my favorite kinds. The ones who hire almost everything out are just not as interesting to me. Thank you, and I’m glad you got an easy one!
P.S. That’s just how the Sierras look right now. Hazy skies and sunshine. No rain to clear the air yet.
Stacy
Thank you, Jennifer. Sometimes I have to call in the pros, but I try to do the work myself as much as possible.
P.S. Even with pollution, I miss the Sierras so much!
Devyn
The room turned out great Stacy!
So glad this turned out to be an easier, gentler, ORC for you.
Stacy
Thank you, Devyn. <3
Sherrill
You have done it again. You’ve imposed your signature style on another room. Your talent for blending the historic with some sleek modern is on display. I love all your decisions and details! But, there is one more thing. The outside of the bathtub is screaming to be painted with your “cast iron” color.
Stacy
Thank you so much, Sherill. I appreciate your comments very much. Also, I love your idea about painting the outside of the tub. I have plenty of Cast Iron left, so I think I’ll take your advice–all credit to you, of course. 🙂
Jen @ Noting Grace
This room is so awesome! I love the wall treatment! Such a super cool idea! I hope this encourages that young man to come home and visit more often!
Stacy
Thank you, Jen! I am crossing my fingers that he gets to come home for the holiday.
Jeri
I love it! The personal touches are perfect.
I do have a question about the doors. I can’t seem to figure out where they each go.
My guesses:
To the right of the current bed is the bedroom door. To the left of the bed is the closet. I know the bathroom door but can’t figure out the purpose of the door across from the bathroom. Isn’t the popped out space they chimney? Why is there a door?
Stacy
Thank you, Jeri! You figured out the doors correctly. There is a small closet on the side of the chimney, and there is another one to the left of the bed.
Jeri
Okay, I read more carefully and now know that the door in the chimney area is a small closet. Does he have another closet near the bed?
Miss-Apple37
Bravo Stacy ! This looks amazing and the room has a cosy and quiet atmosphere, perfect for resting.
Stacy
Thank you so much! 🙂
Michelle
It’s perfect!! The mural really came together and way to go on building that headboard! I was going to go with floating nightstands as well for my master bedroom but ended up scrapping the idea. They have these cool ones that suspend from the ceiling with rope – so awesome! But at the end of the day I felt they didn’t really fit.
I love the sconces too – they fit really well with the natural feel of the headboard. Great job!!
Stacy
Thank you, Michelle. The hanging nightstands sound neat! I understand how they might fit a very specific kind of decor.
Theresa
So well done!! Love everything and what a cool mural! The windows are beautiful and totally get why you’re holding out for the right treatment. Congratulations, all your time, effort and talent shows!
Stacy
Thank you, Theresa. I am super picky about the windows. 🙂 It always makes me happy when someone else understands.
Jess
It looks so great! I wouldn’t mind throwing on a record and climbing into that bed for a little R&R.
Stacy
Thank you, Jess! The bed is open until December. Ha!
Jen
Stacy it looks great! You really nailed the Cabin Vibes. The mural is incredibly soothing to look at and I even love when the bathroom door is open for a glimpse in there (and when does anyone enjoy a view of a bathroom???) And I think the headboard looks fab. It manages to look rustic but still a bit sophisticated because it’s all clean lines. Great work! I’m glad this time around was fewer headaches for you!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Jen. The decor in this room felt like a risk so I’m happy to get your feedback. Also, it’s funny that you mentioned enjoying the peek at the bathroom. That little room is one of my favorites here! It’s so tiny but so cute.
Kalila
I love all of it! It’s so cozy and awesome work on the headboard and beautiful mural ??
Stacy
Thank you, Kalila! The entire time I was building, I would often think WWKD? ?
Suzannah Stanley
Wow!! Very cool! So many good updates! What a cool, cozy room! Love the blanket of course, and all the colors in here are just perfect together!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Suzannah.
Audrey
Wonderful job Stacy! One of my favorite rooms you’ve done so far. The IKEA hack and styling are just lovely! I am loving watching every respectful renovation you’ve done to the house so far. Can’t wait to see what is next!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Audrey! <3
Angie
Such a cozy space for the coming winter! I also like how you created a whole room refresh without spending lots of $$$
Stacy
Thank you, Angie!
Hazel Avery
What a great article. I love the cozy vibe of this cabin bedroom. I’m trying to get a fresh cabinet painting soon in my own place, and seeing your design was really helpful to me. Thanks for sharing!
