Guest Bath Remodel: The Reveal of Very Little

It’s week eight of the One Room Challenge, and wow, am I excited to tell you what I’ll be doing all summer! Spoiler alert: I’ll still be remodeling the guest bathroom. I don’t even know how to describe the ups and downs of this project. None of it has gone according to plan. So, today, I’m just going to show you what I’ve done and offer you a glimpse of what’s ahead.

First, I want to thank Milton & King for providing the fabric that got me excited about finishing this bathroom. After the contractor fiasco, I was pretty down in the dumps. I resented that I had to take on the guest bath remodel by myself, and it was hard to get interested in moving forward. Then, I fell in love with the Japanese Crane print by Milton & King, and it was game-on again.

My goal for reveal week was to stage the sink side of the bathroom so you could at least picture the end. So, I spent the last week sewing the sink skirt and curtain, and they turned out exactly as I hoped.

Milton & King prints their decorator textiles to order, and they offer seven types of base fabric. I chose the low-end drapery base called Cavalry. There was no need to choose something fancier for a project like a bathroom sink skirt. All I was looking for was a substantial weave with a good drape, and that’s exactly what I received.

When I first opened the package, I noticed the vibrant colors and luxurious silky feel. I was a little worried about sewing with slippery fabric, but it stitched up like a dream.

To attach the skirt to the sink, I used Velcro. First, I adhered the (prickly) hook part to the sink with E6000 craft glue. Then, I sewed the (soft) loop side to the top of the skirt.

Although the window restoration is coming right along, the wood still had too much moisture in it to prime and paint on time. So, I had a few pictures photoshopped to show off the curtain. To be clear, the curtain is finished and installed on a tension rod. It’s the sash that is photoshopped. Shout out to Rachel for PS skills.

Tying Up Loose Ends

Although I planned to show you the toilet today, I discovered that the tank was broken when I opened the box—what a disappointment. I never opened the package when I picked it up last December. So, unfortunately, I have no recourse. The toilet is no longer available, but I was able to buy a compatible replacement tank, and it should arrive in the next week or so.

It’s been one thing after another with this guest bath remodel.

It was probably pretty gutsy of me to choose a bathroom to remodel for the One Room Challenge. However, I can’t help but think that if I didn’t have to demo so much, wasn’t recovering from COVID, and had an extra pair of hands for a couple of weeks, it might have come together on time. Instead, this is where we are. I’ll keep working, and I hope you’ll come back to see the bathroom when it’s finished.

Many thanks to The One Room Challenge and media partner, Apartment Therapy. Even though I could not finish, there are a lot of beautiful reveals this week. I invite you to take a look.

Thank you for being here!

You have a level floor and everything is going to be water tight! Hopefully most of the challenging parts are behind you and the rest of the bathroom will come together beautifully!

The bathroom is at least at the stage where everything you do makes it look better. Paint looks great! curtain looks great! Sink skirt looks more than great! This project has definitely been all the baby steps, but it seems like you’ve finally gotten it to the point of fairly consistently moving forward. Woohoo!
