Hot Sash Window Summer is off to a good start. Last weekend, I posted a short Instagram Reel describing how to open a stuck sash window. While getting a lower sash open is quite a straightforward task, I thought a long-form YouTube video might make a good companion. Unfortunately, when I made the Reel, I had to skip a few details here and there to fit the tight timeline.
To open the stuck sash window, I used five tools:
- Hammer
- Utility Knife
- Hive Tool – You may substitute a rigid putty knife.
- Window Zipper
- Screwdriver (similar screwdriver)
Please be sure to read this post for a complete list of my favorite products and tools for window restoration.

I wrestled with YouTube all morning trying to get this video to show up in 4K. Now, I discover that the blog has clamped down on the resolution. So, you may want to click through and watch it directly on YouTube.
