During the month of December, we do not intend to start any new, large DIY projects. I have a call to make about insulation in the attic, but we will be hiring a company to do that. Andy and I have a number of thingsĀ that we are excited to start, but we are trying to really power down during the month of December to prevent living in DIY chaos. During the holiday season, there is already so much extra stuff around the house. Keeping it simple seems like the right thing to do.
That said, I have a hard time staying idle, especially when I have a lot of plans racing through my mind. So, to pass the time until we start tearing up this place again, I hope to have some fun working on small crafts and easy DIY projects that can be completed in 1-3 sit-down sessions. It is time to break out the sewing machine and the glue gun.
Here at Blake Hill House, we have a fondness for the saying, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.ā We are also all about modern living, and we really feel like the two ideals can coexist peacefully as long we consider what we bring into the house and how we acquire it. Our rules are loose, but we stay mindful about where, when, and how we spend our money.
In keeping with our self-imposed limits, as I complete crafts and small DIY projects this month, I plan to adhere to a few guidelines:
- It must be useful to us (or the recipient) long-term, or it must be consumable.
- If it is a seasonal one-use item, we must be able to disassemble it and compost, re-use, or recycle (last resort) the components.
- We will use re-purposed supplies or items on hand as much as possible.
I will be posting all of the projects on Instagram using theĀ hashtags #MakeItUseIt or #MakeItUseItHoliday, or both.
For some of the most popular projects, I will post a full tutorial here on the blog. I may even try my hand at Periscope (Follow me if you like: Stacy G. @BlakeHillHouse, and I would love to follow you.). I have not used Periscope yet, but I am always up for trying something new.
Today, I will get this December party started by sharing our holiday centerpiece made from a log and greenery that we found on the property here at BHH. It is not fancy, but it serves a purpose. We used it on Thanksgiving, and we will continue to use it through the December holidays. I posted a similar photoĀ to Instagram this morning.
I would love to have you play along too. First, follow meĀ on Instagram, and then pleaseĀ post your own pictures. Remember to use the hashtag #MakeItUseIt, #MakeItUseItHoliday, or both, so we can see your projects. Also, please follow the guidelines listed above. I can’t wait to see all of your creative ideas. I hope we will be able to inspire each other.
(If you enjoy these types of challenges or projects, and you would like to be a guest blogger and post a tutorial for something you have made, please reach out to us through Facebook, InstagramĀ or fill out the contact form below.)

Love it! It looks simple and beautiful!
When our friends moved I asked her for her old firewood, not that we have a wb fireplace, but I wanted to decorate with wood this year.
I have a few ideas! I’ll fill out the form.
