Six weeks of blood (blisters! cuts!), sweat, and no tears have brought us all here today. I am operating on very little sleep at this point, but it thrills me to have the blank slate laundry/office complete. Yes! I’m marking it off the list and slamming the figurative book shut. Tada! Behold the place where I shall work and be domestic simultaneously.
I believe the laundry/office combo is the wave of the future. It’s already happening in the IKEA showroom, so why not everywhere? The smell of fresh laundry and productivity go hand-in-hand, no?
Let’s take a pause and look at a a before shot or two. Way back in 2014, it looked like this. I slapped a coat of white paint on the fiberboard walls and walked away for five years.
It’s worth noting that the office side of the room looked like this:
Funny story: BHH did not have any laundry hook-ups or power at all when we moved in. Dorothy washed her clothes at the laundromat, and she hung them on a clothesline in the sleeping porch off the master bedroom. The night after Andy and I made an offer on the house, we were laying in bed, thinking about the house, and it dawned on me that I could not remember seeing a place to hook up a washer and dryer. I asked Andy if he remembered, and he did not. We both figured the facilities were in the basement and we missed them. Nope.
As complete novices with this sort of thing, we had the electrician put the the power in “somewhere that made sense,” and the plumbing followed. As a result, we ended up with a haphazard set-up, but it beat the laundromat.
Earlier this year, while Andy was away for a few hours, curiosity got the best of me, and I started tearing away the acoustic tiles in the ceiling and the fiberboard walls. I expected cracked plaster. What I found was original shiplap–the real deal.
OK, I need to get this reveal post moving. Andy forgave me, we refinished the floors, blah blah blah, and here is where we started at the beginning of week one of the One Room Challenge.
By the way, you might notice some missing details in the reveal photos, but let’s pretend everything is exactly how I meant it to be. If you don’t see anything, bless you. You are now my favorite. Also, this post contains affiliate links.
After I read Daniel’s post on Manhattan Nest about channeling his inner grandpa, the decor plan for this room fell into place. I wanted it to feel like Grandma’s house–a combination of function and a little bit of fancy created with everyday items. By the way, I’m nowhere close to being a real grandma right now.
The Laundry Side
What this entire room lacked was storage. It became the catch-all for our dirty little disorganization secrets, and there were often baskets piled high with clean laundry because the folding table, which was a finger smashing card table, was piled high with stuff that did not have anywhere else to go. For this round of the One Room Challenge, I knew I wanted to take advantage of the space and add cabinets. For the lowers, I chose unfinished Project Source base cabinets from Lowe’s.
I waffled back and forth on the color scheme for the first couple of weeks, but I finally settled on Mount Etna from Sherwin-Williams as the primary color. I cannot even believe that I wanted to paint this room white six weeks ago. Different people read this shade differently. You may ask, is it blue? green? black? The answer is yes to all.
For the uppers, I made cabinets with my own two hands. Dale, of Street Side Front Porch fame, helped me plan everything, and he taught me how to use tools that I had never used before, including SketchUp. He’s a fantastic resource and a generous friend.
And, remember the Rifle Paper Co. fabric color saga? (Should I pick navy or mint?) I chose navy, and I love it so so much. Curtains instead of solid wood doors add lightness to the room. The navy vs. mint poll was nearly 50/50, so I went with my gut. Mint felt a little too country.
We hired electricians to terminate all of the knob and tube wiring, and Dale I built a soffit to house four of these cute lights (only $27.13 each!) that operate with a newfangled light switch. Old house owners, you probably know how exciting it feels to have lights that work with a switch instead of a knob on a sconce.
Although I am excited about the entire room, my very favorite thing is these national park posters from the artist, Rob Decker. And look! They are hanging from old wooden slack hangers that I looted from Andy’s mom’s guest room closet about two years ago. (I finally used them, Maureen.)
The artist signed each poster, and I chose the parks for these reasons:
- Great Smoky Mountains – I was born there.
- Zion National Park – I lived there from ages 2-12, and I moved back solo when I was 20, AND I met Andy there, and we got married in the park.
- Sequoia National Park – This will always be home to me. We moved to BHH from Three Rivers which is right outside of SNP
- Kings Canyon – It borders Sequoia
- Yosemite – Andy chose this one, and it is close to Sequoia.
- Grand Canyon – This is the site of Andy’s infamous coin toss that eventually led to our meeting and well, everything else.
Those are the highlights. Now, let me toss a load of pictures your way, and we will go from there.
More Photos Including the Office Side
Through the years, I’ve moved my desk all over the house looking for just the right spot. I chose this weird laundry/office combo because I love looking out these windows while I work. This room gets ample morning light and sunsets views in the evening.
Now, let’s share a few moments. I don’t know exactly what that means in design-speak, but I think it’s this:
In case you are wondering where to find the laundry/office in BHH, here’s how the rooms flow together.
I realize that I’m not getting any awards here, but I want to take a few moments to thank some people who helped me during the past six weeks. First, thank you to Dale. He’s not the kind of person who needs a lot of praise, but I’m giving it to him anyway. (See you at running club, Dale!). Next, thank you to Erin C. who works for Sherwin-Williams. This is not a sponsored post, but Erin often gives me paint choice advice and support along the way.
Also, there are a few wonderful supporters on Instagram that always keep me going. Crystal found the lights for me on Amazon. Frauke cheers for me from Germany, and Swank Surroundings helped me with lights too. Kalila and I could just hang out and build things together if she would move here. Kathleen just completed her first One Room Challenge, and her sewing room turned out beautifully. Behind the scenes, she has sent such kind notes of support.
Additional thanks go to Linda from Calling it Home for hosting this challenge and Better Homes and Gardens for being an excellent media partner. Finally, before I get kicked off this fake award show, thank you to Andy for taking an extra day off of work last week to paint boring things and make me food. xoxo
To enjoy the projects from the featured design influencers and the rest of the guest participants like me, please make sure to visit the One Room Challenge blog.
If you need me, I’ll be sleeping, and there’s no way I’m getting up at 5:00 tomorrow morning. Congratulations to everyone who completed the One Room Challenge no matter how your project looks today.

I LOVE it! The color palette is stunning and everything turned out beautifully!!! Nice job!! ???
Stacy
SAM! I drew a blank on your name when I was thanking you. I’m so sorry. 😀 I feel so silly. Thank you for everything.
Liz
Stacy, this is wonderful! It’s cozy, not kitschy and done with the eye of an artist.
Stacy
Thank you, Liz. I’m only just now remembering how much I enjoyed art when I was a kid. It becomes easy to squelch creativity in favor of more “practical pursuits.” 🙂
Devyn
Looks fantastic Stacy! So glad you went with your gut and chose the navy fabric. It works really well. I love how the National Parks posters have such personal meaning.
And I didn’t notice anything unfinished at all! ??
Stacy
Thank you, Devyn. There were many times during this project that I thought, WWDD? (What would Devyn do?) The answer is, “He’d go bold.” 😀
PS: Nothing unfinished at all…
SH
Great job updating the room but still keeping to BHH style! No doubt the dark paint was the best choice. Even though there is more storage and functionality, it’s hard to not just stare at all the charm. What if you had never peeked behind the fiberboard? Yikes!
Stacy
Thank you. 🙂 I still can’t believe original shiplap was hiding behind that nasty fiberboard stuff. I wonder how many other secrets BHH holds. I feel like I must have found them all, but maybe not. We will find out together.
Barbara H.
You did a GREAT job! It’s now a beautiful, functional room and no doubt you will soon be wondering how you got along with out it in its present state. Congratulations.
Stacy
Thank you so much, Barbara.

I realize that asking this question will automatically bump me off the favorite list for noticing something but I am curious (and it isn’t really obvious). Are you still working on restoring the windows? I know you were have glass pane issues earlier. I’m wondering if other issues came up with the restoration.
Sleep well and don’t rush to answer!
Stacy
You’ll always be my favorite, Jeri. <3 I am still working on the windows. They are going well, but restoring windows takes time, and I decided not to rush them in favor of meeting a deadline. They are too important. I will get back to the process on the blog and in IG stories very soon. First, we have to finish the living room floors.
Jeri
Oh, I forgot to tell you that I totally LOVE the use of the old hangers! ❤️
Stacy
Thank you! A few years ago, I saw the idea on Pinterest. I think they used them to hang kids’ art.
JC
OMG what is that desk Stacy!? Is it curly/burled cherry? The wood on it looks spectacular.
Stacy
Thank you, JC. I got this desk, covered in drink rings, for super cheap ($40 or $50?) at an estate sale about three years ago. I think it is maple, but I could be wrong. You have far more experience with wood ID than I do. I refinished it with a clear stain and wax, and it has held up very well.
Marie
Wooooow it’s soooo good ! As always, I love your writing and this laundry / office combo is fantastic. It might be my favorite BHH room now 🙂
Great job !
Stacy
Thank you, Marie. I feel honored that it might be your favorite. 🙂
Miss-Apple37
Congrats Stacy, this is beautiful!! This is really funny how the perception of the color changes, just like you said, i sometimes see it green, sometimes dark blue, and sometimes close to black. It adds visual interest and you’re never going to be bored with such a changing room!
Stacy
Thank you so much! I don’t think I have ever used such a chameleon color. Today is a rainy day here, and it looks like a deep ocean blue. Yesterday, it was green all day. 😀
Ame
I love it! Fantastic job, as usual!
Stacy
Thank you, Ame. It’s not white! 😀
CoCo
Stacy this is amazing! You are always so talented with the way you use color. I love all the extra special details you for this room from the fabric for the curtains to the paint color to the hardware and the lights you chose as well. Everything looks SO good. Great job! Hugs, CoCo
Stacy
Thank you so much, CoCo. <3
Jess
I love it! It’s such a great transformation.
Stacy
Thank you, Jess! I hope O. is feeling better now.
Theresa
So well done! Your vision was great and the reality of how it all came together is even better! Hope this weekend you get to put your feet up at the desk and enjoy!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Theresa. 🙂 I will be relaxing this weekend, for sure.
Emy
You did it Stacy! I love everything about this room! It’s perfect. I love your fabric choice with that paint color.
By the way, I also want a grandma house. 😉
Stacy
Thank you, Emy. 🙂 I’m in no hurry whatsoever to be a grandma, but I can get the house ready. LOL
JK
I was so torn on the fabric color choice too but you definitely made the right decision! How did you install the curtains?
Great work on the room! It looks stunning!
Stacy
Thank you! When the fabric samples first arrived, I was very conflicted about colors too. For the curtains, I sewed casings on the top and bottom and hung them with a tension rod. There is a split down the middle so we can tuck items inside or pull them back.
Crystal Diaz
Looks awesome Stacy! I love the green (blue? HA!) so much ♥️
Stacy
Green? Blue? Yes. Thank you, Crystal!
Erica
I would be happy to do work and chores in this space. Jealous of the great light! I’m currently considering moving laundry inside my old (1870) house from the current location in a shed, so this project is a great source of inspiration.
Stacy
Thank you, Erica. 🙂 We are lucky that BHH has so many windows everywhere. Good luck with your laundry room project.
Laura Obrien
Absolutely beautiful!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your journey!
Stacy
Thank you, Laura. 🙂
Marti
I love it! Great work, Stacy. I think the curtains are my favorite part!
Stacy
Thank you, Marti. I don’t sew nearly as much as I used to, but it’s like riding a bike. 🙂
Audrey
Another fabulous one room challenge space! It looks amazing – everything about it is my favorite! I love following along with all the renovation and restoration!!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Audrey. You are such a loyal reader, and I appreciate you. 🙂
Vanessa
Well done Staci!
Vanessa
Well done Stacy!
Stacy
Thank you, Vanessa! 🙂
Jen @ Noting Grace
Stacy! That wall color is a jaw dropper! And those light fixtures – gorgeous! I love reading your story about the National Parks – I never knew that! Super sweet!
Bravo on this stunning reveal, my friend! I always look forward to seeing what amazing transformation you’ll do each season!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Jen. 🙂
Betsy
WOW… The wall color looks so good with the floors! You made the right choice for sure.. This, as in all of your ORC, came out great! I absolutely love how you did the storage and lights above the washer and dryer. My laundry room is much smaller, but you got me thinking how much nicer a base cabinet and top cabinets would look instead of my metal shelving. (great work on the counter tops too)
Congrats on marking another room off of your to do list!!
Stacy
Thank you, Betsy! It feels great to have a new laundry room and office. If you do want to go with cabinets, I highly recommend the unfinished cabinets from Lowe’s. The classic design looks even better than I expected.
Loralee
So great! I am glad you didn’t paint it white! The colors and the fabrics work so well together.
Vanessa@Decor Happy
Lovely transformation Stacy. Love the paint colour and that you used fabric on the cabinet doors – so unique. And I love unique in a world of same old/same old. And the original shiplap – what a find. Congrats on a beautiful result!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Vanessa!
Kalila
Wow! Just wow! It’s been so fun to watch you transform your house room by room. You knocked it out of the park with this one and you should be so proud of yourself. You have definitely inspired me to get my laundry room done. Maybe you can come help me with it ?
Stacy
Thank you so much, Kalila. 🙂 I would love to help with your laundry room, and I wish that were possible.
Angela
Such a lovely room! As one who offices VERY close to laundry, I agree. It is a good combo!!
Stacy
Thank you so much, Angela. I’m glad to know there is another laundry/office fan out there. 😀 Wow! Your guest room turned out so well too.
Cindy
I’m a quilter with a big shopping habit—when I saw these fabric panels it immediately reminded me of the parks prints you used.

I love the fabric. Thank you for sending the link. I might have to incorporate a pillow or two in one of the bedrooms here.
