Yesterday, I needed a little break from ice chipping and hand wringing. Actually, I did my fair share of ice chipping, but I took a breather on the worrying. Instead, M. and I turned our attention to a little skin care project.
I have mentioned in a past post that I like to create my own skincare products for our family. Today, I am excited to share an easy recipe for peppermint lip balm. Our family of six burns through a lot of lip balm. The dry winter air keeps all of us feeling slightly chapped no matter how much water we drink.
Lip balm is one of the easiest skin care products to DIY. The ingredients are forgiving, the process is simple, and it does not rely on a specific temperature in order to solidify. You will find the recipe down towards the bottom of this post. Feel free to print the recipe or pin this post for later.
The Process:
Melt all of the ingredients, except the peppermint essential oil, in a heat safe container inside a small pan of hot water. You may also use a double boiler if you have one. I use an old Pyrex liquid measuring cup inside a small saucepan of water. The measuring cup makes it easier to fill the containers when it is time.
Stir frequently. I like stirring with a wooden chopstick because it does not conduct heat.
Once the ingredients are completely melted, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the peppermint oil drops.
Carefully pour the liquid lip balm into the container of your choice. Once it cools and hardens, place the caps or lids onto your containers.
I re-use empty containers that I have saved from past products. However, you can buy empty, unused tubes if you do not have any or you prefer new.
This particular recipe will make a small batch of approximately 2.25 ounces. Feel free to double it if you want to make more at a time. I recommend making a small batch first in order to determine how much peppermint oil you want to use. I like my lip balm very minty, but not everyone does.
Peppermint lip balm recipe:
2 T Beeswax Pellets
2 t Emulsifying Wax
1 T Shea Butter Cream
15-20 drops of Organic Peppermint Essential OilMelt all of the ingredients, except the peppermint essential oil, in a heat safe container inside a small pan of hot water. You may also use a double boiler if you have one. Stir frequently. Once the ingredients are completely melted, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the peppermint oil drops. Carefully pour the liquid lip balm into the container of your choice. Once it cools and hardens, place the caps or lids onto your containers.

I stash our DIY peppermint lip balm in my gym bag, coat pocket and even in our van during the cooler months. It is nice to have multiple tubes instead of trying to remember where that one expensive store-bought tube is and then finding it melted and destroyed in the dryer. I can’t be the only person who has done that.
Please let me know if you like this recipe or this topic. I enjoy making skincare products, and I am more than happy to write about it more often.
