Edited 7/19/18: Please see the bottom of this post for an exciting update.
Wow! Six weeks have come and gone, and reveal day has finally arrived. I have been pretty quiet on social media and the blog because I have been working tirelessly behind-the-scenes trying to get the street side front porch ready for its close-up.
Let’s take a little peek at a couple of before shots. It is hard to believe that the porch used to look like this:
Green, green everywhere green.
After
In just six short weeks the porch has undergone a complete transformation, and this week has been interesting. Sure, we could have followed our original plan and revealed the gorgeous new front porch today. However, I have learned a lot from watching HGTV. I pay attention to home renovation shows, and I know that the two things people want the most are an open floor plan and to live in Waco, Texas. There was no way I could move BHH to Waco, but I could happily oblige my readers with an open floor plan.
The porch felt immediately lighter and brighter, and I was delighted by the new express route to the basement.
I was so excited by this turn of events that I called my friend Dale to come over to see the progress.
He held up a measuring tape in a useless manner while I pointed at stuff. We both decided that the open floor plan was the perfect design direction. Agreeing that opening it up even more would be the best course of action, Dale broke out the oscillating tool while I hovered nearby for no reason.
We stood back to admire our work, and that’s when I heard a distinct whooshing sound. It took me a second to pinpoint what I was hearing. It was the sound of today’s deadline whizzing past because this entire project had turned into a dumpster fire. Three weeks of snow and more rot than I ever imagined were its undoing.
It’s All About the Details
Not easily discouraged, I turned my attention to decorating. After all, I know a thing or two about creating a gorgeous One Room Challenge space. Flexibility is the name of the game during the ORC.
Almost any project disaster can be salvaged with the proper decor, and my secret weapon is flowers or plants. I tried adding crisp, white impatiens in a classic plastic compartment container, but the scale was entirely off.
So, I settled on two ferns, and they were pure perfection.
I was pleased that the color of the ferns made the green Frog Tape on the right side of the porch pop.
After taking this shot, it was clear that the gaping hole was still too visible, and the space looked cold and ungrounded. It was missing the human element. I grabbed my hammer and positioned myself between the ferns.
Photo 1: Looking at the neighbor’s house (realizing that the mailman was walking up the road, and I looked ridiculous):
Photo 2: Contemplating how awesome my project turned out:
Photo 3: Thinking, I am so putting this one on Instagram. My hair looks amazing.
Right after that last shot, it started pouring rain, and I had to grab the camera and sprint to the covered porch on the other side of the house to keep from getting soaked. It felt like a fitting end to this past six weeks.
What’s Next?
Even though it is hard to take this perfect project and make it even better, I have decided to go ahead and fix all the rot I found, install the rest of the floorboards, and finish decorating too. I recognize that you have the luxury of choice, and there are so many talented featured designers and guest participants who joined this round of the One Room Challenge. You’ll be reading final project posts for weeks.
Even so, I hope you will circle back around to BHH to view the real reveal of the street side front porch. I will be working at a faster pace and writing blog posts as if the challenge is continuing past today. The new floor is going to be gorgeous, and we still need to see if there is a transom window hiding behind that wood above the front door. Remember that cliffhanger?
I invite you to subscribe to our blog below so you’ll never miss an update. Scroll up to the top right-hand side of the page to add us to your favorite reader or get updates via e-mail. As always, a million thanks to everyone who has had my back this past six weeks. Your friendship has made this sinking ship feel less like the Titanic and more like a Princess cruise.
I’m a hugger. If I could, I would hug you all and this big old house too.

My favorite ORC post. 🙂 Good for you for keeping an awesome attitude about all of it. Old houses teach us (frequently unpleasant) lessons, and sometimes, the lesson is flexibility. You’re doing great! Keep up the good work!
Stacy
Thank you, Audrey! BHH won…this time. 🙂
Andrea
I love your open floor plan! Seriously, I know the end product will be amazing, as are all of your undertakings for BHH. Good decision to go slowly and repair things for the long haul!
Stacy
Thank you, Andrea! 🙂
Devyn
Brilliant! I’ve always thought open floor plan was for new construction, but you have elevated it to a much higher level of reality. Looking forward to seeing how you handle this going forward! Also really glad you are not living in Waco, TX (not that there is anything wrong with that).
Stacy
What can I say? I’m a trendsetter. 🙂 Also, I’ve been around long enough that when I hear Waco, I still think Branch Davidians before Chip and Joanna.
SH
I didn’t exactly laugh til I cried, but I did laugh hard and my eyes got teary. Your humor in writing is right up there with your construction and decor skills. I read the open floor plan description (puzzedly? puzzably? is either a word?) and then scrolled down to the photo–soooo funny. Hope you really are doing OK (and hope that your mailman reads your blog too). Love, love, love your IG stories.
Stacy
Excellent, SH! Glad I made you laugh. 🙂 I don’t think the mailman reads my blog, but I am pretty sure he thinks that I am a weirdo.
Keri
Possibly my favorite BHH Blog post ever!
Stacy
Haha! Thanks, Keri.
Vanessa
So. Well. Done. !.
Stacy
Thanks, Vanessa!
Danielle
I’m laughing hysterically over here – love that you took it all in your stride and maintained your humor! The ‘Between Two Ferns’ shots are priceless lol. Old houses are the most beautiful, delicate things – so rewarding to restore, but so dang tempremental during the process! Keep on going, I’ll be right here following along 🙂
Stacy
Thank you, Danielle! All I could do was laugh. Thank you for not giving up on me. 🙂 Your comment speaks the truth. I am heading over to read your reveal post right now! I can’t wait.
Kalila
So glad to see you still have a sense of humor, home renovation/restoration is no joke!
Stacy
Amen!
Berry
I started laughing at the open floor plan and just couldn’t stop. I am so so sorry that you didn’t finish under the wire, but I’m glad you found the rot this way and not when someone stepped through the floor.
Zen hugs from Texas (where nobody wants to move to Waco)
Stacy
Thank you, Berry. I’ll take those hugs from Not Waco, Texas. 🙂
Bobbie
Haha. Brilliant.
Stacy
Thanks, Bobbie! 🙂
Julia at Home on 129 Acres
This post is a great way to handle your situation. I’m glad you’re going to continue as if the ORC hasn’t ended. I’m excited to see the result.
Stacy
Thank you, Julia! Thank you for sticking with me. 🙂
Megan
My favorite ORC post that I’ve read :-). Good luck finishing! What an accomplishment it will be when complete!
Stacy
Thank you, Megan! 🙂

Stacy, good for you girl! The ferns are gorgeous and so are you.
Have I ever told you that my dad will turn 80 this year…he has been refurbishing houses all my life and several have been over 100 years old. HGTV drives him crazy because they make everything look so easy and affordable. I’m going to show him this post and I know he’ll be so proud that you stopped in your tracks to take care of business. You have to fix all of the rotted wood, otherwise, you’d just have a pretty porch that would fall down sooner or later. Keep going!!
Stacy
Aww. Thanks, Stacey. 🙂 Your dad and I could sit around and chat about this all day long. I like him already.
Jenny
Hahaha, oh dear. Love this post!
I already subscribe to BHH updates, so I can’t wait to see how the open floor plan evolves! 😉
Stacy
Thanks, Jenny! I’m glad you aren’t giving up on me. 😀 I may change my mind about the open floor plan. I’ll keep you posted. 🙂
Emy
I love your reveal so much! Those ferns really add a homey touch! And I’m loving that frog tape!! 😉
Seriously I love this post. It’s important to do things the right way. I’m terrified to redo our front porch because I’m pretty sure the whole front wall of our sunroom is bad.
Can’t wait to see your finished porch. <3
Stacy
Thank you so much, Emy. 😀 Ferns are never wrong.
I’ll be crossing my fingers that your porch and sunroom aren’t as bad as you think.
Norah
Nailed it! What a transformation! Congratulations on winning the ORC this round.
🙂
Stacy
Hahahahaha! It was an honor just to be nominated. 😀
Susanne
I know when you finish this it is going to be amazing!! I totally get the “I look ridiculous” feeling…had that one day when the UPS driver showed up and I was taking pictures outside and of course talking to myself, lol!! I can’t wait to see it all finished!!
Stacy
That’s hilarious, Susanne. 🙂 I wonder what he thought.
CoCo
I for realz love you Stacy! This was a huge project and I know you’re probably bummed about all the rot because that seems like a lot of extra work. But your approach to everything is fabulous and I love how positive you have remained throughout this process. I can’t wait to see how this comes together. I know it’s going to be amazing just like everything else you do. I’m cheering you on, CoCo
Stacy
Haha! Thank you, CoCo. You know I feel the same way about you. I was disappointed, but I just keep moving forward on the project. It can’t last forever, can it? Can it? 😀
Barbara H.
Great posts – both the in process and the after. Really loved the positive trajectory of the in process and so glad it has a happy ending.
Stacy
Thank you, Barbara! I look back at that project with fond memories. 🙂
