Street Side Porch | One Room Challenge Week 2

Thank you for all of your comments and support for our One Room Challenge project. With no spring in sight, this week, my hands have only stayed busy online shopping and planning. It has been far too cold to paint or demo. I should probably feel a little panicked about this, but for some reason, I am feeling utterly zen about this entire project. Remind me of that when I am freaking out during weeks three and four. Seriously, I may need you all to bring me back to earth when that happens.

If you are visiting for the first time today, thank you. I am so glad to have you here. For the 2018 Spring One Room Challenge, we are restoring and renovating the street side front porch. Currently, it is a most unwelcome entry to BHH.

The Plan

I think that Andy is on board with rebuilding the porch floor now instead of later. It is always difficult to make these types of decisions with an old house. Every project like this opens a can of worms, and we are steeling ourselves for any scenario. I feel confident that we can tackle this job as a DIY, but I will be consulting my good friend for some expert advice. In list form, the project looks like this:

  • Prime and paint the complete interior
  • Install a new light fixture
  • Uncover the possible transom window
  • If it’s not a transom, add a pane of glass or cover it up again
  • Make it beautiful (This is the most challenging part of the project for me.)

So far, the mood board is a little sparse, but I am whipping out my credit card for these items:

Paint: Hale Navy and Monterey White by BM | Light | Doorbell Cover

Items I have yet to find:

  • A small rustic bench (perhaps a DIY project)
  • An inexpensive umbrella holder
  • A hook for dry cleaning delivery
  •  Proper welcome mat

Executing the Plan

I am taking deep cleansing breaths as I add up the expense of restoring and renovating this small porch. We have planned for this, and it is going to be ok, but I get twitchy when it is time to shell out the Benjamins for a new project.  Does anyone else feel this way?

Hopefully, by next week, I will have some real work to show. If we have decent weather over the weekend, we should be able to get our hands dirty and make some progress.

Until then, please visit the One Room Challenge website to view the projects from the featured designers and the other guest participants like us. Inspiration abounds. Get your pinning fingers ready. That reminds me, BHH is also on Pinterest. I have a love/hate relationship with that platform. However, there you will find our board titled Front Porch. Take a peek. Be advised that we have two front porches, so not everything is relevant to the street side porch.

Also, I invite you to subscribe to our blog below so you’ll never miss an update. Scroll up to the top righthand side of the page to add us to your favorite reader or get updates via e-mail. It is a great way to keep in touch between weekly blog posts.
