Today is a two-post day here at BHH. I just wrapped up an article about removing swirl marks and finish sanding. I intended to post it yesterday, but my day went from bad to worse. First, my computer’s touchpad and Bluetooth mouse stopped working, rendering my laptop useless. Rebooting did not solve the problem. That was a minor inconvenience compared to what happened next.
In the morning, I had an interview with a restoration professional for an upcoming episode of the True Tales From Old Houses podcast. The interview lasted an hour, and it was full of useful information. When I went to download the audio files, there was no data whatsoever. The SD card did not record the interview! I felt sick. Before every episode, I follow a pre-flight checklist, and I follow in-session checks too. All signs pointed toward everything working correctly. I still do not know what happened.
With a terrible feeling in my stomach, I called my guest to explain that the entire interview was lost. I felt so dumb, and I was sad that I wasted his time. For the self-employed, time really is money. He could not have been nicer about it, and he was very generous about rescheduling. There are so many kind people in the world, and he is one of them. Now, I can say that one of my worst fears about podcasting has come true. Recorder didn’t work? Check.

- The One Room Challengeâ„¢ starts the first week of April. Gulp. As the floor refinishing project continues, the ORC speeds toward me faster than I would like. My office, which is also the laundry, gets a makeover this round. A few weeks ago, we uncovered original shiplap and a planked ceiling in the room. This house keeps offering us gifts.
- The house in Florida where the movie My Girl was filmed, is for sale. Do you remember that movie? What a tearjerker.
- Rifle Paper Co. debuted the new Wildwood fabric collection this week, and I could not love it more. This one is my favorite.
- The new fabric collection inspired my search for botanical throw pillows because that’s what I should be doing with my time instead of working on the floor project, right? I found a bunch of adorable ones for a shockingly reasonable price. I am so ready for spring, and my decor choices reflect that.

DIY Meal Kit Recipe: Spicy Garlic Pasta
This week’s DIY meal kit recipe for Spicy Garlic Pasta pulls together lightning fast. With only five ingredients, it is simple and inexpensive.
If you are unfamiliar with the BHH concept of DIY meal kits, please read this post first. The initial recipe post in this series is also helpful and informative. Note: Most of our recipes are vegetarian.
Recipe: 5 Ingredient Spicy Garlic Pasta
Recipe Notes:
- In this week’s meal kit, I did not pre-measure the red pepper flakes or olive oil.
- If you have time, sauteed mushrooms and peppers add a lot to this dish.
- I used jarred, minced garlic. It kind of cheating, but that’s how I roll in the kitchen.
- Use whole wheat pasta for added nutrition or substitute a gluten-free variety.
- Add a small cut of meat or a boiled egg for some additional protein.
Storage Containers
We use these Sistema KLIP IT boxes (shown today) or the larger size depending on our needs. We are also big fans of 1.3 cup Snapware* for small portions. They fit nicely in the Sistema Klip-it storage boxes. I also recently added these tiny lidded glass containers (intended for baby food, but they work perfectly for spices or small portions).
*This links to the plastic version, but we prefer glass. Unfortunately, the glass containers, sold in sets of four, seem difficult to find now. This 10-piece set includes the small Snapware containers we use as well as some additional, useful sizes.
Do you have any fun weekend plans? I just reserved a heavy-duty sander again, so Andy and I will be back to work in the foyer this time. BHH is still such a disaster, and I’m getting anxious to put everything back in order and do a deep clean.
