Window Restoration Workshops

Once again, Bradley Huber and I are excited to offer window restoration education at the Silver Lake Institute in Perry, NY. Last summer was a resounding success, so this summer, we will offer two weekend workshops: July 19-21 & July 26-28. Purchase tickets here.

Located near Letchworth State Park in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Silver Lake Institute is a historic lakeside community comprised of Victorian-era cottages. Our workshop will be held in the enchanting 1892 Epworth Hall, offering participants a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on learning amidst rich historical surroundings while actively contributing to the restoration of a significant National Register property in need.

Participants will start by familiarizing themselves with lead-safe practices and reviewing the essential tools of the trade. Then, they’ll dive into the practical aspect of the workshop, refurbishing one sash from start to finish. This comprehensive experience will cover the entire window restoration process, including sash removal, stripping, repair, sanding, glazing, and painting.

In addition to the workshop sessions, registration includes optional after-hours events designed to enrich participants’ experience. These events range from a preservation-focused excursion to Letchworth State Park, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” to a guided tour Burley’s Berries & Blooms to witness the magic of fresh milk production. Afterwards, wander through the wildflower crop and handpick a delightful bouquet to take home.

Rest and relaxation are also important, so we’ve included a delightful lakeside concert, an indulgent ice cream social, and an informal opportunity for “drinks and hangs” at a local brewery—perfect for unwinding after a day of hands-on learning and exploration.

"The wood window workshop at Silver Lake Institute was a great way to learn the skills of window restoration while also taking an active part in a historic restoration project. It was a good value for the very reasonable cost. Stacy is knowledgeable and patient. It was also good to meet others interested in preservation. I left there with the confidence and ability to tackle my own window restoration and help others in my community. It was a memorable, educational, and fun."

"The WWW was an amazing experience. We had a little experience with repairs and learning from Stacy gave us more confidence and a few more hints to use while we're repairing our own old windows. Stacy was an amazing instructor and Brad was a great host. Silver Lake is a beautiful little lake town. We enjoyed meeting them and other "old house" geeks!"

"Attending the workshop gave me the opportunity to get hands on in learning to restore a window. Beyond reading or watching a tutorial, actually getting to do the work and have Stacy guide me through it gave me confidence as I look to restore my old windows. Additionally, Stacy provided helpful background knowledge that enabled me to look at and assess the condition of my windows holistically and better understand what attention they need. It was also lovely to meet others on similar old house journeys and hear their old house stories."

"I signed up for the Wood Window Workshop at Silver Lake on a whim when Brad (ittybittybungalow) announced it on his instagram story. I had no idea what to expect, but what I got was a fun and educational weekend with historical preservation fans from all over the country. Stacy is a wonderful teacher who was patient with all of our questions. She pushed us to make mistakes (that's the only way you'll truly learn) and try things that were outside of our comfort zone."

- Eliza

"If you are considering restoration or repair of your windows but don’t know where to start, this workshop will walk you through from beginning to end. The workshop exposes you to time saving tools and methods, hands on with materials, and guidance for several techniques."
